From next February 9, 2023, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) will launch its new route from Copenhagen to New York. According to the airline, the new route will help Scandinavian Airlines(SAS) passengers to travel easily from both the West and East side of New York as SAS continues to offer departures from Scandinavia to Newark.

From February, SAS will start flying directly from Copenhagen to New York JFK. Initially we’ll fly five times weekly, and from the summer increase to daily departures. ✈️ #flysas #journeysthatmatter pic.twitter.com/ZcuAl5rgdq

This new service will be Scandinavian Airlines (SAS)’ 13th route to the United States. It currently operates 3 routes from Stockholm (ARN), 2 from Oslo (OSL), and 8 from Copenhagen (CPH). Overall, the airline has 65 weekly services and 15,654 seats available.

John F. Kennedy International Airport

The John F. Kennedy International Airport(JFK) service will start with 5 weekly flights from Copenhagen, ramping up with daily flight services for the summer schedule. SAS will be operating in Terminal 7 at JFK. At JFK, we can find other Star Alliance members such as Copa Airlines, Avianca, Turkish Airlines, Egyptair, TAP Air Portugal, EVA Air, All Nippon Airways, and United Airlines. The coming of SAS at Terminal 7 will permit passengers to connect easily with United Airlines.

  • As previously stated, SAS has plenty of commercial services in the United States. Erik Westman, EVP & CCO, Network and Revenue management at SAS, stated,

“We are very pleased to launch our new route to John F. Kennedy International Airport(JFK). SAS offers a solid product to Newark Airport from Scandinavia, and we feel that this addition to John F. Kennedy International Airport(JFK) from Copenhagen will strengthen the New York offer to our passengers.

  • The United States is a strategic market for SAS, and we will continue to develop new routes and destinations whenever the right chance presents itself.”

United States destinations continue to generate the requirement for more frequent departures. SAS will offer about 130 departures per week on a total of 12 routes this winter.

The new route to JFK will depart from Copenhagen on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 18:25, arriving at 21:30 local time. The return service will depart at 23:00, coming to Copenhagen at 12:55 the next day.

Once the service becomes daily in the summer season of 2023, it will depart from Denmark at 19:20, coming at 22:00 local time. The return service will depart at 23:55, coming at 13:45.

SAS has yet to declare which aircraft it might employ in its services to JFK. In the Copenhagen-Newark route, SAS now start operates its services with its Airbus A330-300 fleet.

These aircraft have the capacity to carry up to 266 passengers in a 3-class configuration (178 in economy, 56 in premium economy, and 32 in business).

Nonetheless, SAS is scheduling 2 daily flight services for next February 2023 on this route and, according to Cirium, is looking to employ its narrowbody Airbus A321neo fleet, just like it currently does in routes from Copenhagen to Boston and Washington. For the route to JFK, SAS could do the same. We will have to wait and see.
